Some of you might already know how I love my contests. Well, I have another idea, and this time the idea is to broaden my horizons when it comes to drinking (something some would call an impossible task). So this summer, or beginning as soon as possible, my plan is to hold a "contest" in which I drink 32 beers, 1 from each representative country in this summer's World Cup. I have some ideas, like Guiness for Ireland, but others are puzzling, like what's a good beer from Slovenia? Suggestions are welcome, and there might be a prize if you suggest the beer that ends up winning.
For those that don't know, the following is a list of all countries that will compete in this summer's World Cup. All suggestions, the more creative the better and as many as possible, are welcome.

Um...where do you plan on finding these beers? Will you be the only judge or will there be a panel of judges?
ReplyDeleteA panel is a good idea. That way, if one person gets falling down drunk, the rest can continue on without him.
ReplyDeleteI'm so down with this. It's probably going to require buying beer online, but no worries I found this: http://www.internationalbeershop.com You can buy by the bottle, and search by country. Other ideas for finding these beers, hitting the hoods where these immigrant communities live. I don't know anything about Philly's demographics, but I can surely visit the local craft beer distributors here for the obscure European ones, and try other areas for the S. American and African ones.
ReplyDeleteSo, after doing some research, here are the most popular beers of said countries:
Group A
South Africa - Castle Beer (http://www.internationalbeershop.com.au/products.asp?product_id=353)
Mexico - Corona, Negra Modello, Tecate. All available in the USA
Uruguay - Patricia Beer... but I can't find where to buy it, uh oh!!
France - 1664 (http://www.internationalbeershop.com.au/products.asp?product_id=40) I've had this in UK, it's ok beer, nothing to write home about.
Group B
Argentina - Quilmes Cerveza (http://www.internationalbeershop.com.au/products.asp?product_id=1364)
Nigeria - Star Lager (Can't find for sale online, right now...)
South Korea - Cass Beer (http://www.internationalbeershop.com.au/products.asp?product_id=210)
Greece - Mythos Beer (http://www.internationalbeershop.com.au/products.asp?product_id=264) I could probably get this in my hood, since I live in the largest Greek population outside of Greece itself.
Group C
England - NEWCASTLE! :)
United States - NOT BUDWESIER! :)
Algeria - Tango Beer (This is a tough one! Algeria is a Muslim country, and it's hard to find beer there... getting some may be harder. There are wines however, we may have to compromise...)
Slovenia - Union Beer (Can't find for sale online, right now...)
Group D
Germany - Beck's is an easy one
Australia - Fosters is easy too.
Serbia - Jelen Pivo Beer (Can't find for sale online, right now...)
Ghana - Club Premium Lager (Can't find for sale online, right now...)
Group E
Netherlands - Heineken, easy!
Denmark - Mikkeller Drikkeriget GIPA (http://www.internationalbeershop.com.au/products.asp?product_id=1503)
Japan - Kirin Ichiban!
Cameroon - Castel Beer (Can't find for sale online, right now...)
Group F
Italy - Peroni is an easy one
Paraguay - Pilsen Beer (really not much info at all about this...)
New Zealand - Red Lion Beer (http://www.internationalbeershop.com.au/products.asp?product_id=305)
Slovakia - Golden Phesant (http://www.internationalbeershop.com.au/products.asp?product_id=930)
Group G
Brazil - Bramha Beer (http://www.brahma.com/where)
North Korea - Taedonggang, but this is gonna be pretty impossible to get imported...
Ivory Coast - Solibra (Can't find for sale online, right now...)
Portugal - Sagres (http://www.beerhere.co.uk/acatalog/Sagres_lagers.html)
Group H
Spain - Alhambra Negra (http://www.internationalbeershop.com.au/products.asp?product_id=537)
Switzerland - Ziegel Hof (Uh. There are lot of Swiss beer, just little info...)
Honduras - Salva Vida (Can't find for sale online, right now...)
Chile - Escudo (Can't find for sale online, right now...)
This is going to be such a drunken mess. I can't wait!
ReplyDeleteseriously! 32 beers? Even if we shared 1/2 with someone, it's still 16... we may have to pour out 1 bottle amongst 4 people. That's still 8 beers, more than enough.
ReplyDeleteFor USA, I was thinking Yeungling. It's the best domestic beer to me, but if there's a panel, we might have to have a few sessions just to narrow it down to one. I might start buying a six pack a week and storing it in Brigantine, while grabbing those beers from that international beer site a little later on. As for the actual drinking, the contest will probably be spread out over a weekend or a few days. Maybe different people can try different beers and we can narrow it down to a few that everyone drinks. If eight people drink four beers each, and pick one, we'll be down to eight.
ReplyDeleteThen, we should probably stop the contest (but not drinking) then resume the next day so we can each have about eight beers and declare a winner. Roughly. This can be tweaked.
Good list Kel! If you want to come for this, let me know when and we'll do it then. It can be just about any time this year. I just hope we actually end up doing it!
I do want to take part. Not sure when though, but we can figure that out as the games get closers. Maybe for the finals or something?
ReplyDeleteThe final is July 11. I usually take two weeks vacation at the beginning of July, but I'm not sure I'll be able to this year. If so, it can be the first or second weekend of July. The first weekend is the 4th of July on Sunday, so maybe the second will work better.
ReplyDeleteOr the first since it's my birthday weekend.
